Poetry of Stone is the stone artistry of Nicholas Gilbert.
I specialize in creating one-of-a-kind stone mosaic and veneer artwork for Interior and exterior applications. My services include design, fabrication and installation of custom, site-specific pieces. I handle every job with the same dedication and attention to detail regardless of scale or complexity of design. Custom mosaics can be produced in the studio, transferred to a substrate then transported and installed on site anywhere in the world using the finest materials to ensure a finished product that will withstand the hard test of time. Ancient mosaics around the world are proof that few other artistic mediums are as capable of enduring for centuries the way stone can. This is why it is my medium of choice. My other services include fine woodworking, wood carving, sign making, Glass etching, custom painting and murals.
Examples of possible commissions could include:
Custom furniture, foyer, fireplace mantle and hearth, custom doors, windows, birdhouse and birdfeeder installations, kitchens (Backsplash, countertops, floors), bathrooms (floors, showers, counters) mirrors, frames, hallways, decorative accents , hot tub, spa, koi pond, garden sculpture, patios, walkways, steps, framed artwork, murals, and signs.
Pricing is dependent on several factors including: Material, size, method of application, complexity of design, and schedule/lead time. Some jobs can be completed in a couple weeks and some take several months. Please note that jobs requiring waterproofing such as bathrooms, showers and kitchens require additional preparation time and materials.
I enjoy working with a client and the space a piece will inhabit to achieve something truly extraordinary.
I was an artist as long as I can recall. My father used to draw with me on his lap as a child and I grew up practicing woodcarving and building in his shop. Later I began an apprenticeship with a master stone and tile mason where I learned to use and love the medium of stone. I worked in several other mediums through my teen years and was fortunate enough to land a full scholarship to the Rhode island school of Design. I worked on the major renovation of the historic Argos Inn in Ithaca NY and was awarded a certificate of excellence by the New York State Historic Preservation Society. I currently reside and work in Ithaca NY.
